Other Courses Suitable for School Students

St John is keen to support teachers as much as possible in introducing first aid training at all levels of schooling - from Pre-school to year 12.

To this end, St John offers discounted accredited and non-accredited training to school groups. These can be tailored to meet your students' needs.

Flexible Apply First Aid Course (Nationally Accredited)
For high school and college students we recommend that they complete HLTFA311A Apply First Aid (formerly known as Senior First Aid). St John offers flexible learning options for school groups which include a CD or workbook that can be worked through in class time with the guidance of the class teacher or independently. (about 8 hours worth of work) When this is completed, a nationally accredited St John trainer runs a full day session at your school where key concepts are revised and hands-on skills are demonstrated and practiced. The day concludes with practical and written (multiple choice) assessments. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a nationally recognised statement of attainment. This can be very valuable for those seeking to enter the workforce.

This course has less content than Apply First Aid and there is no requirement for pre-course work, although manuals can be provided for teachers to prepare the students beforehand.  Provide Basic Emergency Life Support – HLTFA201B will provide students with the skills to manage emergency first aid situations including managing an unconscious casualty, performing CPR, controlling bleeding and managing other life threatening situations. The day concludes with practical and written (multiple choice) assessments. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a nationally recognised statement of attainment.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Nationally Accredited)
CPR is an important skill for High school students to develop as they begin to engage in more risk taking behaviour with their peers. This course teaches students the DRSABCD action plan including how to manage an unconscious patient, perform CPR and use a defibrillator. The day concludes with a practical CPR assessment. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a nationally recognised statement of attainment.

Students will need to have sufficient strength to compress an adult manikin to a third of its chest depth to pass this course. The DRSABCD action plan and CPR can be successfully taught to younger children, including upper primary students, however we suggest this is done through a tailored workshop or a Junior First Aid course rather than this course.
