Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) Program

  1

For every 1 minute treatment is delayed,
the chance of recovery from a heart attack is reduced by 10%.

Every day in Australia, 41 families lose a loved one to sudden cardiac arrest. Many of these deaths could be prevented if a Defibrillator (also known as an AED) was within reach.

Some 30,000 Australians die from SCA each year, making it Australia’s biggest killer. Survival of SCA in Australia is estimated to be 12%, or 25% if the SCA is witnessed by a bystander. In the ACT, only 12-15 people who suffer a cardiac arrest each year survive. Survival in other parts of the world is as high as 65% for witnessed SCA.

Help us achieve our goal to make ACT a world leader in public access defibrillation. St John Ambulance ACT is calling on the business community to purchase wifi-enabled defibrillation units and make them available for community use when needed.

We want to see a Canberra where, if a friend, a workmate or a member of the public has a heart attack, you’ll be able to find and use a defibrillator within the critical 3-minute timeframe. We know if it can be done that fast, there is a real chance of making a full recovery.

A study of incidents at the MCG showed that “out of 28 victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, 86% left the venue alive” having been treated at the scene with a defibrillator.

Compare this to the average witnessed cardiac survival rate in ACT of just 7%.

Join the PAD program and help us make ACT a world leader in Public Access Defibrillation.

About the PAD Program

The St John Ambulance Australia ACT Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Program will create a database with the location of each defibrillator in the network, which will then be provided to the ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS). When ACTAS receives an emergency call with a suspected cardiac arrest, they will be able to use this database to locate and advise the caller of the nearest defibrillator for use prior to the arrival of paramedics.
